Vongku Pak’s style combines poongmul, samulnori, elements of traditional dance, and western drama into innovative compositions that enhances and modernizes Korea’s native arts while preserving their fundamental forms. Vongku has been featured in tours of Europe and Korea, in solo and symphony at Carnegie Hall, in The Out of Doors Festival at Lincoln Center, and in international performances in the Dominican Republic. He is the first and only traditional Korean drummer to possess a Music Under New York permit to play in the subway, and has been featured on Fox TV’s Good Day New York, on recordings by Ishle Yi Park and by Xtatika. Trained by masters, Hyungsoon Kim in Suljanggu and KiBock Kim in Utdari Poongmul in Korea, Vongku has also completed a BA in Theater at Brooklyn College. From his base in Brooklyn, New York, he currently lives in Brooklyn, New York where he teaches drumming and mask dance, and travels to performances all over the world. |
